Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS ought to be enough to secure direct entry to the knockout stages, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season proved no match even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
