Unbowed Celtic's manager shows no fear of being fired yet supporters display fury after derby defeat.
Wilfried Nancy insisted he had no concerns about the sack, maintaining, “I believe we are very near to changing our fortunes,” even after sliding worryingly close to the chopping block with a comprehensive defeat by their arch-rivals.
A Second-Half Collapse Leads to Old Firm Loss
The home side had led Rangers at half-time but a disastrous second period let Rangers to move level on points with the defending Scottish Premiership champions. Nancy, who was hired in December, has now been in charge for six defeats in his last eight matches.
“The board and I are united with the board,” said Nancy.
Pressed on whether he was concerned, the 48-year-old said: “It’s not on my mind. I concentrate on finding ways to help my team to be good on small moments.
Protest Outside Parkhead
Hundreds of supporters made their feelings clear – directed at the board and manager – by protesting outside the stadium. Club directors are reportedly likely to bring back Martin O’Neill, who enjoyed a successful caretaker period last year, if the Frenchman were sacked.
“The outcomes [that leads to pressure]. That is the reality for the moment. But by saying this is the reality, that is not a sign that I am a defeatist guy. Absolutely not. The message is the turnaround is near, really, really close to turn things around.”
Focus on the Details
Nancy remains focused on the fact the side can perform strongly for a half at a time. For instance, but for wastefulness in front of goal they could have been greater than 1-0 up. “I saw enough aside from the fact that we didn't take more goals,” he said. “I acknowledge that we lost, but I must remain objective.
“The level we had at stages was exceptionally high. That happened. I could not say that if it was untrue. But that’s why, in terms of results, I mentioned it's a repeating pattern. Which is why I feel we are nearly there to a shift in fortunes. Currently: details, details, details.”
“I saw plenty of positives that we did, like today again. However is sustaining it. My narrative would change if it was not the case. That’s why I firmly believe we will manage to fix this.”
Opposition Reaction Outlook
Danny Röhl played down talk of a serious challenge despite what appeared to be a statement victory. “One match at a time, then we can really build up momentum,” he said. “The confidence in the group is immense.”
